WHO WE ARE

St. Joe Valley PHCC October Newsletter

Dave Frame talks with UA President Bill Hite In Chicago

It’s been an exciting month with the PHCC National Convention in Chicago and a full contingency attending from the St. Joe Valley PHCC. It is always great to be in the windy city, particularly when you get to network with colleagues and friends from around the country.

St. Joe Valley members attended the ISH show, featuring the newest products and technology. Several also were part of a packed house listening to author James Bradley discuss his book (coming out as a movie later this month) “Flags of our Fathers.” His father was one of the soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima. The book recalls his journey to learn as much as he could about the soldiers in that picture, three who did not return home. His motivational speech basically stressed the significance of one person working to fulfill a dream.

Also at the convention, Indiana PHCC Executive Director Brenda Dant, CAE, won five awards for her various publications. Congratulations Brenda.

October could be even busier than September, so mark your calendars! Here are some upcoming news and events:

  • On October 26, Bill Ciriello of the IndianaPlumbing Commission, will be the guest speaker at the LaSalle Grill, discussing enforcement of the licensed plumbing law in Indiana and St. Joe County. Several St. Joe Valley PHCC members will be meeting with Ciriello and state and local officials, including South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke and Building Commissioner Don Fozo earlier that day, to discuss ways this law can be enforced in this area. Come find out the results of that meeting.

  • Negotiations will begin soon for a new contract. Your negotiating committee is made up of Steve Meyer, chairman; Charles Watterson;David Dodd, and Don Wroblewski. If you haven’t already done so, please return the forms that were faxed or mailed to you designating St. Joe Valley PHCC as your bargaining agent. Thank you to those who responded immediately. Our fax number is 574-243-8220.

  • The November meeting will take place November 16 at the MainStreet Grille. The date is scheduled earlier than normal due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

  • Friday, December 8 is the date of the Holiday Party at Morris Park CountryClub. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending our annual event. Details of the charity we will donate to that evening will be sent to you soon.

  • President Dave Frame and John O’Laughlin of OJS Building Services have been spearheading a St. Joe Valley PHCC effort to see if our association can do anything to help save the Conservatory and greenhouses at Potawatomi Park. He has been gathering information about a more efficient heating system for the facility, which is a long time favorite spot in our community.

  • Please welcome new member Jerry Dominiack Jr., who has started a new business, Dominiack Mechanical, LLC.

  • Congratulations to Gordon Slutsky for being singled out as a great boss. His employee, Courtney Slamin, was featured in a October 3 article in the South Bend Tribune. Slamin, who has a 20-month-old daughter, said Slutsky gave her the federal 12-week maternity leave, even though he wasn’t required to give it to her. “He’s very flexible as long as I get my work done,” she said.
