The St. Joe Valley PHCC had it
all in June: educational programs, networking
and involvement in a worthwhile community cause.
Michelle Boyd of Top Notch,
a labor/management organization headquartered
in Indianapolis, spoke to contractors at the
June membership meeting at the South Bend Marriott.
The group is a labor/management cooperative voice
for the union construction industry. It represents
75,000 union tradesmen and 4,000 union contractors
throughout the state. In existence more than
30 years, Top Notch helps put together PLAs or
Project Labor Agreements for large, complex projects
such as Lucas Oil Stadium and Circle Center Mall.
It also pools money to provide quality advertising
projects that promote the union construction
industry. A campaign entitled “Skilled on
Principle, Union by Choice” has been shown
in various advertisements throughout Indiana.
At this time, Top Notch does
not have a presence in this area. The organization
is funded through collective bargaining contributions
or annual contributions.
Boyd noted that the Indiana union
construction industry invests more than $25 million
a year in self-funded apprenticeship training
programs and is the largest supplier of skilled
workers in the construction industry in Indiana.
Networking not only took place
at the membership dinner but at the Hug A Plumber
Night at Coveleski Stadium. St. Joe Valley partnered
with Local 172 Plumbers and Pipefitters again
for a fun evening at the ballpark. Thanks to Julie
Markiewicz and everyone at Local 172 for working
so hard to put this night together. The weather
cooperated and everyone had lots of fun. President
Steve Meyer’s
wife, Cindy, sang the National Anthem, which was
an unexpected surprise. Thanks to Bruce Lyons
of NIBCO for donating a keg of beer for the second
year in a row.
Treasurer Dave Frame was on hand
for the opening of the community garden at the
Center for the Homeless, which also took place
in June. St. Joe Valley and Local 172 contributed
more than $10,000 in labor and materials for the
water line for this worthwhile project. The garden
looks a lot different than it did a year ago
when the line was installed! A wide array of
vegetables, herbs and flowers have been planted
for the residents of the center to enjoy. The
space also includes a gazebo and a stage area.
Please see the sign featuring
St. Joe Valley and Local 172 at the end of the
newsletter.
In other news:
July 10 is the deadline to sign up for a room
at the Indiana Expo scheduled for a second year
at Belterra Resort & Casino in southern Indiana.
The expo will take place July 29- 31. Don’t
miss out a chance to put yourself ahead of your
competitors as you meet with vendors and manufacturers
and participate in some fantastic educational
opportunities. Those sessions include: “Tapping
your Unseen Business Potential” and “Warrior
Management.” Both are led by Brad Dawson,
a small business consulatant.
July 15 is the deadline for a St. Joe Valley
PHCC scholarship application, to be given out
at the annual picnic August 14 at George Wilson
Park. Invitations will be going out in July for
the picnic, intended for members and their family
and key personnel. Please send in the RSVP when
you get the invitation so that we can order food
and buy toys for the kids. Don’t miss out
on the famous corn and sausage!
Local 172’s picnic will be Saturday, August
1, at ZB Falcon Conservation Club on Roosevelt
Road in South Bend from noon to 6 p.m., with food
served at 1 p.m.
Congrats to Steve Meyer’s golf team, who
came in first at the Indiana PHCC Golf outing
at Rock Hollow in Peru. Second place went to another
St. Joe Valley team of Jim Trippel, Terry Trippel,
Tim Trippel and Ron Trippel. The rain held out
for another great day of golf.
